Buying Reclaimed
Materials
Everything you need to know — from matching brickwork to planning permission requirements.
Why Choose Reclaimed Materials?
- Authentic character — Decades of weathering give reclaimed bricks, tiles and stone a warmth and depth that new materials lack. Especially important when extending or repairing period properties.
- Planning compliance — Many conservation areas and listed building consents require reclaimed or traditional materials. Using reclaimed stock from the right era ensures your project meets planning conditions.
- Environmental sustainability — Reusing materials keeps them out of landfill and avoids the energy cost of manufacturing new products.
- Proven durability — Materials that have lasted 100+ years in a Norfolk building have already proven they can withstand the local climate.
- Cost effectiveness — Reclaimed materials are competitively priced, especially when you factor in the superior appearance.
How to Match Existing Materials
If you are extending a building or repairing a wall and need to match existing brickwork or roofing:
- Bring a sample — Take a brick, tile or piece of stone from an inconspicuous spot and bring it to our yard. We can compare against our stock to find the closest match.
- Know the age — Tell us roughly when the building was constructed. This helps narrow down the type and origin of the materials.
- Check the size — Older buildings often use imperial-sized bricks (9 x 4.5 x 3 inches) which are slightly larger than modern metric. Getting the size right is essential for coursing to line up.
- Consider weathering — Newly placed reclaimed materials will look slightly different from those in situ for decades. Over time, the new additions will weather to match.
Planning Permission & Conservation Areas
If your property is in a conservation area or is a listed building, you may be required to use specific types of materials. Common planning conditions include:
- Use of reclaimed Norfolk red bricks to match existing
- Reclaimed Norfolk pantiles for roof extensions
- Lime mortar rather than cement mortar for pointing
- Natural slate to match existing roof covering
- Traditional timber windows rather than UPVC
