Norfolk Pamments
Traditional Norfolk Clay Floor Tiles
Norfolk pamments are the traditional clay floor tiles found in farmhouses, cottages, churches and grand houses across the county. Made from local clay and fired in Norfolk kilns, these handsome square tiles have been a defining feature of East Anglian interiors for centuries.
At Mooney Demolition, we hold one of the largest stocks of reclaimed pamments in Norfolk. All our pamments are carefully salvaged from demolition projects, cleaned and sorted by size. Their warm tones and worn surfaces bring an authenticity to floors that no new tile can match.
Pamment Sizes in Stock
We stock the three most common sizes of Norfolk pamment. Actual dimensions may vary slightly as these are handmade tiles.
The most common Norfolk pamment size. Ideal for cottage kitchens, hallways and utility rooms. Approximately 230mm x 230mm. Typically 25–30mm thick.
A slightly larger format found in many Norfolk farmhouses. Approximately 255mm x 255mm. Gives a bolder look with fewer grout lines. Typically 25–35mm thick.
The largest standard pamment size. Impressive in larger rooms, hallways and churches. Approximately 305mm x 305mm. Typically 30–40mm thick. Less common, so check availability.
Brick Flooring
In addition to pamments, we also stock reclaimed floor bricks — the heavy-duty bricks originally used in stables, dairies and workshops. These make a stunning alternative floor covering with a more rugged, industrial character.
Floor bricks can be laid in a variety of patterns including herringbone, basketweave and running bond. They are extremely hard-wearing and develop a beautiful patina over time. Available in reds and darker tones.
Laying Guide
Reclaimed pamments should be laid on a solid, level substrate. For ground floors, a concrete slab with a damp-proof membrane is recommended. The pamments are typically laid on a semi-dry mortar bed with lime-based mortar joints.
Key points for a successful pamment floor:
- Sort pamments by thickness before laying to minimise variation
- Soak pamments before laying to prevent rapid moisture loss from the mortar
- Use a lime mortar rather than cement — it allows the tiles to breathe
- Seal with a breathable sealant once fully dry — linseed oil is traditional
- Allow for slight size variation — these are handmade, not machine-cut
Quantity Calculator
As a rough guide: 9″ pamments cover approximately 16 tiles per square metre. 10″ pamments cover approximately 13 tiles per square metre. 12″ pamments cover approximately 9 tiles per square metre. We recommend ordering 10% extra to allow for cuts, breakages and variation.
